Dear European Union Leaders, Decision-Makers, and Representatives,
![]() |
I love EU in 2017 May |
I am writing to you because the dismantling of democracy in Hungary is now a completed fact. The country is no longer a democratic state governed by the rule of law, but an oligarchic system that serves only the interests of the ruling elite. However, this is not just Hungary’s problem – it is Europe’s problem, too.
I cannot believe that the leaders of the European Union do not see this. As early as 2017, it was clear to me that Viktor Orbán and his regime were turning Hungary into a Russian-style rogue state. If an average Hungarian citizen could recognize this years ago, then the decision-makers of the European Union were certainly aware of it as well. If you knew that the Orbán regime was destroying the rule of law in Hungary, yet were unable or unwilling to stop it, then the question arises: how real are European values?
If Europe Does Not Act, It Prepares Its Own Demise
If the European Union has knowingly watched a member state dismantle its freedoms in recent years, then the idea of a united Europe and our shared values is nothing more than a mirage. If the defense of the rule of law is merely a political tool selectively applied, rather than a universal principle, then the EU is nothing more than a bureaucratic conglomerate. In that case, it is not just Hungary that will be lost – Europe itself will be lost.
The 21st century’s crises are already here: Russian aggression, the global decline of democracy, the climate crisis, and growing economic and social inequalities. If Europe cannot defend its own values, it will not be external threats that destroy it, but internal betrayal. And in that case, the EU itself becomes a traitor, just like Viktor Orbán, for abandoning its own citizens.
This Is Not the Europe I Dreamed of as a Child
As a child, I believed in a Europe that builds a true community. A world where justice and morality are not just empty words, but real guiding principles. I did not invest my life’s plans in a Europe that fails to stand up for its own values. I did not dedicate years of learning and work to an institution that allows itself to be undermined from within.
How much longer will you tolerate an authoritarian regime corroding the EU from the inside? How much longer will you stand by as Hungary becomes Putin’s outpost in Europe? How much longer will you allow European values to be systematically humiliated?
The time to act is now—not just for Hungary, but for Europe’s own future.
Sincerely,
A Hungarian citizen who still believes in Europe.
